Offline and local-first are not identical promises
An offline-capable counter can continue important work during an internet interruption. A local-first system goes further: the core application and primary operational data are designed around the machine running the business, not a remote browser session.
Kassivo uses a Windows application and local SQLite core. Connected terminals and companions can communicate over the local network, while services that genuinely require external live state pause or recover according to their own boundary.

Ask vendors to separate core operation, local-network operation and internet-dependent services.

Test internet loss and host loss separately
First disconnect the internet while keeping the Windows host and local network running. Then test a terminal losing its connection to the host. These are different failures: working locally does not mean a disconnected terminal can read the host’s latest records.
Kassivo distinguishes queueable writes from operations that need live server state. Shared-value actions, including gift-card operations, have online restrictions. Test reconnection with a small known set of records, and verify the outcome before relying on a recovery procedure during a busy shift.

Local operation still needs operational discipline
Local-first does not remove the need for backups, device care, power protection and tested recovery. Ownership gives the business more control and more responsibility.
Shared balances, remote services and other live integrations cannot be honestly described as independent of connectivity. Kassivo distinguishes those boundaries rather than turning “offline” into an absolute marketing claim.
